I use 3 hardware profiles on my machine. As you cannot link these profiles and user accounts I have used a combination of 3 Prolink configuarations and 3 VDT desktops to create a specific desktop for a particular profile. I have three questions.
Is it possible to have different icons on each of the three desktops?
If not, is it possible to have different layouts of those icons on each of the 3 desktops?
The idea behind the profiles is to free up memory for applications so, once a particular profile has opened a particular desktop, is it possible to close the other 2 desktops thus saving memory?
You cannot link different icons and different layouts to desktops; we considered in developping this feature, but we just want to be sure that this will not be included to LongHorn. The only desktop manager that covers this feature (as far as we know) is Multi User Desktop www.multiuserdesktop.com.
We don't have profiles (the closest feature is our scenarios). However your suggestion is quite interesting and we will check how we can include it in future versions.
Thanks for the reply ... I understand the icons bit.
On the last question of closing desktops how does automatic closing work?
With no active windows open on my other two desktops, should they then close as that has not happened with the way I have it set up. I have the "Close desktop when empty" box checked for each desktop.
When the "Close desktop when empty" box is checked, the desktop should close (after something like 30-60 seconds): 1) when it contained at least one window, 2) but at this time it has no more displayed windows.
We tested this features without any problem with the "Accessories" and "Microsoft Office" scenarios that are created when installing VDT (these desktops have this feature enabled), but we know that this feature may fail in some circumstances (for example when a process that doesn't display any window is running within a desktop).
If this doesn't work for you, let us know: 1) if you're using virtual or non virtual desktops 2) in case of non virtual desktops, if Windows explorer is running within them 3) what kind of applications are running in your desktops 4) your OS and VDT version (release number included).
PS: we will probably add a profile concept in early 2005.
