Multiple Profiles in Mozilla Firefox
Permalink Closed

I run 5 non-virtual desktops including the default desktop and 0 virtual desktops. I like to be surfing the web for many different things each with many different windows open. I may have 10 windows of Firefox open about one topic on one desktop, 15 Firefox windows open about another topic on the next desktop, and 20 other instances of Firefox open on my last desktop.

Also, I like to have my computer automatically run a webpage and do something while I sleep. For example: I have it check various email accounts at 2:00 AM. Unfortunately I cannot do this anymore...If I have one window of Firefox open on one desktop then I need to select a different profile for the second instance of Firefox on the next desktop. This prevents me from running certain tasks when I'm away from my computer as well as having my bookmarks and cookie settings separated into 5 different accounts and having them all different. If I want to allow cookies for a specific site then I have to open Firefox once in each of the five desktops and type it in. This is very frustrating.

Is there a way that you can make Firefox think that there is only one instance of Firefox running so without using virtual desktops? If not: Is there a way that I can set each desktop to automatically load a certain profile on boot without me having to manually select it when opening Firefox?

I am running Windows XP Pro SP2, VDT Pro v2.30.0, Mozilla Firefox v1.0

Unfortunately no; this is the way Windows manages processes and programs and there is no way to change it.

Are you talking about Firefox profiles?

Yes, I am talking about Firefox profiles.

Is there a way that I can have my computer boot up and load an instance of Firefox on each desktop with a different Firefox profile on each one? I want it so that when my computer is done booting I can switch to each desktop and have each one already running the browser. However, since it must use a different Firefox profile I would like VDT to automatically select a different Firefox profile for each one on boot without me manually clicking the one I want in each desktop.

In fact, we don't know how Firefox works so it is hard for us to answer.

Our first answer was to say that Firefox should have a command line option that allows to load a profile (something like -p <Profile to be loaded>); but we went to Mozilla web site and we didn't find such an option (the -p option loads the profile manager).

Unfortunately, I don't think that there is a solution right now if this command line option doesn't exist. VDT cannot simulate keybord or mouse input within the user interface.
