Can't switch to Desktops (non-virtual desktops)
Permalink Closed

I am unable to use the Microsoft Office and Remote Connection scenarios.  They launch, but I cannot switch to them.  When I try to switch to them I default back to the Default Desktop.  If I create a desktop (non-virtual) I experience the same problem.  I have the latest version of VDT.

I had a problem with the latest (2.72.2) version of VDT. If you downloaded before tuesday, please download again and reinstall.

So...

Right-click the VDT icon in the notification area to display the VDT menu, go to "Settings" and then "R2d2 Kernel Authority".

In the "Put in LOG" area, check the "Information messages", "Warning messages", "Error messages" and "Instead of using..." boxes. Give a 999 KB size for the log in the same area. Click Ok.

Logoff and logon, and then switch to the non virtual desktop a few times.

Go to the Windows folder and send the R2d2KernelAuthority.log file to support@R2d2-Software.com

So, if you look at your LOG file:

  • [INF200605311859040046 KA000002976]Switching to Microsoft Office (R2d2 Software-KA: desktop 0-1): external request: this is the switch request you made using VDT

  • [INF200605311859040828 KA000002976]Switching to Default desktop (Default): switch made using 3rd-party tool: VDT detected that you switched to another desktop, but without using VDT

It seems that you have another program that switches back to the default desktop when staying in another desktop (GMail Notifier for example; go there for more information). This will not happen if you use virtual desktops (that are a software implementation; non virtual desktops are an OS implementation); do you have a special reason for using non virtual desktops?

Thank you for your prompt response and direction (gmail notify).  Whilst I don't run gmail notify I started exiting all my resident programs and found that Miranda Instant Messenger was the 3rd Party Tool causing the switch back to my default desktop.  As you pointed out, it does not happen using Virtual Desktops so I can continue to use Miranda and close it down whenever I need to use a non-virtual desktop.  There may be other Instant Messengers I can use that don't cause this issue, but that's for another time to investigate.  Again, thanks.  I think VDT is great!
