I had upgraded Windows XP 32bit SP2 with Virtual Desktop installed. I disabled the Virtual Desktop autorun before beginning the upgrade. After the upgrade was complete I tried to run VD but got a flickering screen (autohide taskbar flickered just enough to see the new Start button and the edges of the taskbar). I also had 100% CPU utilization. I'm running it on a Dell D810 laptop docked and using a second external monitor.
At that point I enquired here for Vista compatability.
So next I completely uninstalled and reinstalled. After Virtual Desktop started I got the same flickering and CPU utilization as before. I had to force power down and reboot at one point since my box was pretty much unresponsive. After rebooting I got enough control to turn off the tabbed desktop selection bar that runs across the top of the screen. Since then the system has been stable and Virtual Desktop performs normally.
Of course I had to run through the settings about 5 times to get them to stick as usual. :) But now I have everything back to my preferred environment and I'm very happy.
I'll post once more after I install on the home PC. That will be a clean Install and not an upgrade and only one monitor.
Having the same trouble on the home PC. It's clean Vista install on a single monitor desktop box. It appears that something in VDT is causing the taskbar to open and close as fast as the computer can do it. I can see the round Start button graphic flickering. And I can't actually open the taskbar to do anything.
Turning off the tabbed desktop selection bar across the top did not help this time. It must be something else or a combination. I'll continue to troubleshoot...
I was able to kill explorer.exe. When it automatically regenerated in the default desktop the flickering and CPU pegging had stopped. I killed it in my second desktop and then manually added it back. The flickering stopped there also.
I'll limp along this way until more info is available.
I'm finding other issues such as launched programs opening in the wrong desktop (yes, I have the "automatically add visible..." box checked) so I'm having to back out of Vista for now.
Don't think I mentioned but this is Vista RTM.
I just donated another $10. I would appreciate any priority that can be given to resolving this issue. Thanks again for a wonderful program.
Thanks for all the information and for your donation. I unfortunately can't answer to questions about Vista as I don't have any "fresh" copy yet (and I'm currently really busy with my regular work ).
As I said before, I will do the work to test over Vista ASAP. I hope I will have a copy soon (in a few days) and then I will start to test and make changes.
